Responsibility and Authority

What do you think of this?

Many people struggle at work, school, home because they want more authority.

It turns out you can get a lot done if you just take more responsibility instead. It's often offered, rarely taken.

(And you can get even more done if you give away credit, relentlessly).

Taken from Seth Godin blog post.

i believe this is true. what incentive does a employer have to give you more authority if you dont take more responisbility. though giving away too much credit causes the slackers to drag down the entire group, such as the case in a communistic community, where there is no insentive to try above and beyond the call of duty. so some form of accountability must be in place.

Great response! I wonder how in a high school class we can minimize the chance that group members dont carry their weight?

I think that responsibolity and authority are inversly related. If you have more authority you need more responsibility and if you are more responsible you can get more authority (like a job promotion). So if you wanted to get more authority at home, school, or work you just have to show that you are responsible enough to handle it.

More authority requires more responsibility because you now are in charge of not only your agenda, but you also are responsible for those that work under you and what they are working on. It is true that more responsiblility is offered, for example to join a club in school, there are many different clubs available but often times students do not choose to join. When you take on responsibility you generally get more done because there is more to do on your agenda and when you aren't in a management position you are able to place more of your focuses toward your own goals/accomplishments.

Many people strive to obtain more authority within their everyday lives. With authority comes great responsibility. If you are eager to work and you work to the best of your ability you will become an ideal role model amongst your peers, colleagues etc. This responsibility will become contaigious and a lot of work will get done. This consistant responsibility in itself will lead to greater authority. It is important to also give away credit as this will allow more work to get done.

I think this makes a lot of sense because you cant expect to be successfulm or get ahead if you don't take any responsibility. You need to have responsibilty before you can have authority because why would someone trust you to be a leader if they can't trust you to be resposible?

I agree with this post. You must constantly take on as much responsibility as possible if you wish to move up in the ranks. If you take on minimal responsibility it shows that you are lazy and nobody wants a lazy employee in a high possition.

I think this is true. In school i think more Authority leads to more responsibility. I think the more responsibility a person has the more likely a person is to succeed, as long as its not overwhelming. In school, in sports, in a job. I think this all applies to the more authority a person has, which leads up to the more responsibility a person has because if you have the responsibility, you will more willing to get the job done

When you want more authority, that usually means that your responsible enough to handle it all. You want to get all your work done before you worry about any other workers. Giving away credit isn't just neccessary, but key to letting your employee's know what they are doing right. To much can be a bad thing, so you have to be good with it. You cant expect to be successfull unless you take up more responsiblity and do things right and correctly, be a leader. If you want to move up the ranks in your company and make big moves, start doing more and working harder.

I believe authority and responcibility are similar. The more authority you have the more responcibility you have to have. You have to show others your authority so they know you can be responcible.
